{"id":1170,"date":"2018-07-21T15:17:27","date_gmt":"2018-07-21T14:17:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/globalfraudforensics.com\/fraudxpose\/?p=1170"},"modified":"2018-07-21T15:17:27","modified_gmt":"2018-07-21T14:17:27","slug":"naive-cyber-criminals-jailed-after-13-lottery-heist","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/globalfraudforensics.com\/fraudxpose\/naive-cyber-criminals-jailed-after-13-lottery-heist\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;NAIVE CYBER CRIMINALS JAILED AFTER \u00a313 LOTTERY HEIST"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Two cyber criminals have been sentenced for committing offences against the National Lottery following a National Crime Agency investigation.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel Thompson, 27, and Idris Kayode Akinwunmi, 21, were jailed for eight months and four months respectively at Birmingham Crown Court in relation to the 2016 attack.<\/p>\n<p>The men used an online application to bombard the victim\u2019s web domain with thousands of attempts to log in to customer accounts.<\/p>\n<p>Thompson admitted unauthorised computer access with intent to commit other offences and two counts of obtaining an article for the commission of a computer misuse offence.<\/p>\n<p>Akinwunmi admitted unauthorised computer access with intent to commit other offences and fraud by false representation.<\/p>\n<p>Between 16 and 28 November 2016 Camelot identified thousands of unique IP addresses attempting to access National Lottery customer accounts and notified the NCA.<\/p>\n<p>Investigators established that the IP addresses were linked to Thompson and Akinwunmi who used the online application to force into Camelot\u2019s web domain. Akinwunmi was identified as accessing one customer\u2019s account and removing \u00a313.<\/p>\n<p>Thompson was arrested on 30 November 2016 \u2013 forensic examination of his Lenovo laptop showed he had the \u2018brute forcer\u2019 application and evidence of hacking. He admitted downloading files and said he was unaware that he was responsible for tens of thousands of log in attempts.<\/p>\n<p>In interview he said he did it because he likes \u201cto see how things work\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Akinwunmi was arrested on 21 December 2016.<\/p>\n<p>He told officers: \u201cI was just being silly and na\u00efve really\u2026It was just a na\u00efve act to make a little bit of cash.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>NCA senior investigating officer Lauren Morgan said: \u201cNo one should think\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.businesscloud.co.uk\/tags\/bc-cyber-crime\">cyber crime\u00a0<\/a>is victimless or that they can get away with it.
