You may want to take a close look at your multi-factor authentication settings on your online accounts, particularly your email, and protections on your cellphone plan.<\/p>\n<p>The FBI is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fbi.gov\/contact-us\/field-offices\/sanfrancisco\/news\/press-releases\/fbi-san-francisco-warns-the-public-of-the-dangers-of-sim-swapping\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">warning<\/a>\u00a0of what it says is an uptick in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.co.uk\/2019\/02\/09\/security_roundup\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SIM-swapping fraud<\/a>incidents. Criminals call a target&#8217;s phone carrier&#8217;s customer support, and, through blagging and social engineering, request that their mark&#8217;s mobile phone number be switched to a SIM card in a device belonging to the crooks.<\/p>\n<p>Should the transfer work, the thieves then attempt to reset the password on the victim&#8217;s email account, using the two-factor authentication code sent to the mark&#8217;s phone number, which is directed to the crim&#8217;s handset. From there, the miscreants can reset the password on the victim&#8217;s cloud-based crypto-coin wallets, and drain it of digital dosh.<\/p>\n<p>Either switch to physical hardware tokens to protect accounts, ideally, or authentication apps, and\/or call your carrier and put SIM transfer protections on your plan.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The FBI has seen an increase in the use of SIM swapping by criminals to steal digital currency using information found on social media,&#8221; said Special Agent John Bennett from the FBI San Francisco Division.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This includes personally identifying information or details about the victim\u2019s digital currency accounts.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The FBI wants to help individuals make themselves harder targets and, if they are victimized, to quickly regain control of their accounts to mitigate any potential harm.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"boxout\">\n<p><b>In brief&#8230;<\/b>\u00a0If you&#8217;re wondering how some\u00a0<b>iOS jailbreakers<\/b>\u00a0and other infosec researchers crack certain parts of Apple&#8217;s iPhone security so fast when a new device comes out, it&#8217;s probably because they\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/motherboard.vice.com\/en_us\/article\/gyakgw\/the-prototype-dev-fused-iphones-that-hackers-use-to-research-apple-zero-days\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">obtain<\/a>\u00a0prototypes of the hardware that have security measures disabled, allowing them to poke around the firmware for vulnerabilities&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Google temporarily\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/madebygoogle\/status\/1102554379016495104\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">switched off<\/a>\u00a0<b>Android TV photo-sharing<\/b>after a privacy-busting bug caused hundreds of strangers&#8217; pictures\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/wothadei\/status\/1102089147596992512\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">started showing up<\/a>\u00a0in the &#8220;linked accounts&#8221; feature in people&#8217;s accounts&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><b>Debt collectors and stalkers<\/b>\u00a0have been\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/motherboard.vice.com\/en_us\/article\/panvkz\/stalkers-debt-collectors-bounty-hunters-impersonate-cops-phone-location-data\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">caught pretending<\/a>\u00a0to be cops to extract folks&#8217;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.co.uk\/2019\/02\/08\/mobile_companies_selling_locations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">smartphone location data<\/a>\u00a0from telcos in the US&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><b>Chelsea Manning<\/b>\u00a0was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/chelsea-manning-jailed-refusing-testify-grand-jury-virginia-n980016\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">jailed<\/a>\u00a0on Friday for refusing to testify before US grand jury probing WikiLeaks and its document dumps.
