{"id":1962,"date":"2019-03-20T06:57:10","date_gmt":"2019-03-20T05:57:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/globalfraudforensics.com\/fraudxpose\/?p=1962"},"modified":"2019-03-20T06:57:10","modified_gmt":"2019-03-20T05:57:10","slug":"nigeria-may-have-become-an-electronic-dumping-ground","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/globalfraudforensics.com\/fraudxpose\/nigeria-may-have-become-an-electronic-dumping-ground\/","title":{"rendered":"Nigeria may have become an electronic dumping ground"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"td-post-comments\">Prof. Umar Garba Danbatta, Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), has said that over 75 per cent of electronics devices imported into Nigeria are irreparable and toxic junk.<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailytrust.com.ng\/75-of-electronic-devices-imported-to-nigeria-are-toxic-junk-ncc.html\">Danbatta\u00a0stated this on Tuesday in Abuja\u00a0<\/a>during the public inquiry on draft guidelines on disaster recovery and draft regulations on e-waste.<\/p>\n<p>He said Nigeria had become a dumping ground for all kinds of telecommunications electronics devices, noting that\u00a0that most of the electronics were faulty and waste to the country they emanated from.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He explained,<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cin nigeria, due to low gross domestic product per capita\/low income, and the desperate quest for information, it is estimated that 75 per cent of electronics imported into the country are irreparable and toxic junk.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cthese are second-hand electronics devices. they have one fault or the other from their countries of origins. they were rejected in these countries. as it is with the nature of some nigerians, they go for cheaper products. we should not accept them. we will do everything to ensure that they are not dumped in our country. they are obsolete and irreparable.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>How can this be managed?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Danbatta\u00a0said in line with its regulatory mandate and to keep pace with efforts at managing e-waste related issues, the commission has developed draft regulations on waste to address the menace in the country.<\/p>\n<p>Adding that the draft regulation is industry-specific as it keys into national and international levels.<\/p>\n<p>According to him, \u201cthe regulations represents a holistic intervention aimed at providing clarity and delimiting the responsibilities of various stakeholders in the e- waste value chain within the telecom industry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The draft regulation said that every player within the e-waste management value chain \u2013 manufacturer, transporter, collection and disposal facility and recycler \u2013 must<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> obtain authorisation from the commission after the coming into effect of the regulation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">NCC is also making efforts to\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/nairametrics.com\/2019\/01\/30\/ncc-said\/\">put an end to telecommunication fraud<\/a>\u00a0that has increased since the introduction of smart phones.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h1 class=\"entry-title\">Nigeria may have become an electronic dumping ground<\/h1>\n<div class=\"td-module-meta-info\">\n<div class=\"td-post-author-name\">\n<div class=\"td-author-by\">By<\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nairametrics.com\/author\/adaobi-nnadiukwu\/\">Adaobi Nnadiukwu<\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"td-author-line\">\u00a0&#8211;<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span class=\"td-post-date\"><time class=\"entry-date updated td-module-date\" datetime=\"2019-03-06T23:56:01+00:00\">March 6, 2019<\/time><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"td-post-comments\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Prof. Umar Garba Danbatta, Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), has said that over 75 per cent of electronics devices imported into Nigeria are irreparable and toxic junk.
