{"id":2074,"date":"2019-03-28T15:07:54","date_gmt":"2019-03-28T14:07:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/globalfraudforensics.com\/fraudxpose\/?p=2074"},"modified":"2019-03-27T15:15:30","modified_gmt":"2019-03-27T14:15:30","slug":"fraudsters-targeting-online-gamers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/globalfraudforensics.com\/fraudxpose\/fraudsters-targeting-online-gamers\/","title":{"rendered":"Fraudsters targeting online gamers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Don\u2019t let fraud ruin your fun \u2013 Action Fraud warns against fraudsters targeting online gamers.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Action Fraud is warning parents and online gamers of the risk of fraud involving\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/store.steampowered.com\/digitalgiftcards\/\" data-cke-saved-href=\"https:\/\/store.steampowered.com\/digitalgiftcards\/\">Steam Cards<\/a>and\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.epicgames.com\/fortnite\/en-US\/home\" data-cke-saved-href=\"https:\/\/www.epicgames.com\/fortnite\/en-US\/home\">Fortnite<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Between 1 April 2017 and 31 March 2018, Action Fraud received 35 reports of Fortnite related fraud, with a total loss off\u00a0<strong>\u00a35,119<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 an average of\u00a0<strong>\u00a3146 per victim<\/strong>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In the same period, Action Fraud received 37 reports of Steam Card fraud, with a total loss of\u00a0<strong>\u00a344,455.98<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 an average of\u00a0<strong>\u00a3123.88 per victim<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000000;\">How is Fortnite fraud happening?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Action Fraud has seen reports, made mainly by parents on behalf of their children, of fraudsters who are taking advantage of Fortnite gamers. In most reports, the gamer has seen an advert on a social media channel which claims that by following a web link and entering some information, they will receive free Vbucks (currency for the game). Fraudsters will ask the victim for information about their account which will then allow them to log in and create fraudulent charges.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Fraudsters are targeting victims in many other ways. These include asking for people\u2019s phone numbers in return for Vbucks to then sign the victim up to a premium rate subscription service, selling access to other people\u2019s Fortnite accounts, and offering VBucks for free then actually charging for it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000000;\">How is Steam Card fraud happening?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Action Fraud has seen a spike in fraudsters requesting Steam Cards as a way to gain upfront fees from unsuspecting victims.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Victims are being called by fraudsters, claiming to be from well-known organisations. The victims are instructed to purchase Steam Cards in order to pay for the processing of tax refunds or rebates, PPI refunds, administrative costs for processing loans and for providing anti-virus software.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">As with<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.actionfraud.police.uk\/news\/itunes-gift-cards-favoured-by-fraudsters-aug16\" data-cke-saved-href=\"https:\/\/www.actionfraud.police.uk\/news\/itunes-gift-cards-favoured-by-fraudsters-aug16\">\u00a0iTunes gift cards<\/a>, the fraudster doesn\u2019t require the physical Steam Card to redeem the value. Instead, the victim is asked to read out the serial code on the back over the phone.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Director of Action Fraud, Pauline Smith, said:\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cIt is vital that both parents and those playing games online are able to spot the signs of fraud, as fraudsters will go to great lengths to try to steal your money.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8220;It is also important that parents make their children aware of the threat of fraud online.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cIf you are downloading or purchasing game add-ons, make sure you use the official website. You should never reveal your password or banking details to someone you don\u2019t know, or be tempted to click on links to unknown.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cIf you think you have been a victim of fraud, contact Action Fraud.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Protect yourself from gaming fraud\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">HMRC, or any other government department, will never ask for payment in the form of Steam Cards, or any other gift card, such as iTunes.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Personal information\u00a0<\/strong>\u2013 Always question requests for personal or financial information. The promise of &#8216;free&#8217; vouchers or credits is a common tactic used by fraudsters to persuade people to give out sensitive, personal or financial details.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Listen to your instincts\u00a0<\/strong>\u2013 If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
