{"id":2098,"date":"2019-03-29T04:57:18","date_gmt":"2019-03-29T03:57:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/globalfraudforensics.com\/fraudxpose\/?p=2098"},"modified":"2019-03-29T04:57:18","modified_gmt":"2019-03-29T03:57:18","slug":"college-admissions-scandal-ex-yale-football-coach-pleads-guilty-to-fraud","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/globalfraudforensics.com\/fraudxpose\/college-admissions-scandal-ex-yale-football-coach-pleads-guilty-to-fraud\/","title":{"rendered":"College admissions scandal: Ex-Yale football coach pleads guilty to fraud"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>A former Yale University football coach has pleaded guilty to fraud-related charges for allegedly accepting bribes to help students get into the college.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Women&#8217;s football coach Rudy Meredith accepted a $400,000 (\u00a3306,000) bribe to\u00a0<a style=\"font-style: inherit; color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-us-canada-47709546\"><strong>fraudulently mark<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0a non-athletic student as a recruit, prosecutors say.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The case is part of a wider scam that helped wealthy parents buy admission to elite universities for their children.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Mr Meredith is one of 50 individuals charged in the investigation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The former coach, who resigned last November, has been ordered to forfeit a total of $866,000.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The Ivy League university was targeted in the scheme along with other elite universities like Stanford and Georgetown, allegedly organised by mastermind Rick Singer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Mr Singer has pleaded guilty to charges including racketeering for his role in the scheme.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"font-style: inherit; color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-us-canada-47709546\"><strong>Yale student expelled over &#8216;$1.2m bribe&#8217;<\/strong><\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"font-style: inherit; color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-us-canada-47585336\"><strong>Celebrity parents and the bizarre &#8216;cheating&#8217; scandal<\/strong><\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"font-style: inherit; color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-us-canada-47546946\"><strong>Indicted US actress&#8217; daughters in spotlight<\/strong><\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">According to court documents, Mr Singer allegedly sent Mr Meredith a copy of the student&#8217;s CV around November 2017, noting he would fraudulently revise the applicant&#8217;s art portfolio to &#8220;soccer.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Mr Meredith would later mark the applicant as a recruit despite knowing the student did not play competitive soccer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Mr Singer and Mr Meredith had allegedly been conspiring on bribery schemes together since around 2015.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Earlier this week Yale rescinded the admission of a student whose family is accused of spending $1.2m (\u00a3907,000) as a bribe intended to ensure admission. The university confirmed the case but would not name the student whose admission had been revoked.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The alleged scheme helped students cheat and fake scores on entrance exams, in addition to fraudulent athletics scholarships.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The resulting investigation, called &#8220;Operation Varsity Blues&#8221;,\u00a0<a style=\"font-style: inherit; color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-us-canada-47557056\"><strong>ultimately snared celebrity parents<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0Lori Laughlin and Felicity Huffman, both indicted in the case.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Mr Meredith will be sentenced on 20 June.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-us-canada-47738370\">https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-us-canada-47738370<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A former Yale University football coach has pleaded guilty to fraud-related charges for allegedly accepting bribes to help students get into the college.
