{"id":2122,"date":"2019-04-01T05:21:23","date_gmt":"2019-04-01T04:21:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/globalfraudforensics.com\/fraudxpose\/?p=2122"},"modified":"2019-03-31T15:29:14","modified_gmt":"2019-03-31T14:29:14","slug":"man-pleads-guilty-to-stealing-100m-from-google-and-facebook-by-sending-fake-invoices","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/globalfraudforensics.com\/fraudxpose\/man-pleads-guilty-to-stealing-100m-from-google-and-facebook-by-sending-fake-invoices\/","title":{"rendered":"Man pleads guilty to stealing $100m from Google and Facebook by sending fake invoices"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Evaldas Rimasauska could face up to 30 years in prison after posing as Taiwanese hardware firm Quanta Computer<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Evaldas Rimasauskas, 50, sent fraudulent invoices to Facebook and Google between 2013 and 2015, according to the US Justice Department\u00a0<em><span style=\"font-weight: inherit;\">(Getty)<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/Lithuania\" data-vars-item-name=\"BL-8840071-https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/Lithuania\" data-vars-event-id=\"c6\">Lithuanian<\/a>\u00a0man who duped\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/Google\" data-vars-item-name=\"BL-8840071-https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/Google\" data-vars-event-id=\"c6\">Google<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/Facebook\" data-vars-item-name=\"BL-8840071-https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/Facebook\" data-vars-event-id=\"c6\">Facebook<\/a>\u00a0into transferring over $100m into accounts he controlled has pleaded guilty to wire fraud.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Evaldas Rimasauskas, 50, sent\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/fraud\" data-vars-item-name=\"BL-8840071-https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/fraud\" data-vars-event-id=\"c6\">fraudulent<\/a>\u00a0invoices to the California-based tech companies between 2013 and 2015, according to the US Justice Department.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">He was involved in running a company that controlled several accounts at banks in Latvia and Cyprus, according to a 2016 indictment filed in the US\u00a0Attorney\u2019s Office for the Southern District of New York.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Mr Rimasauskas and his unnamed associates were posing as Quanta Computer, a hardware company based in Taiwan that has done business with Facebook and Google,\u00a0<em style=\"font-weight: inherit;\">Reuters<\/em>\u00a0reported.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Mr Rimasauskas pleaded guilty to wire fraud in federal court in Manhattan, where Judge George B Daniels set a 24 July\u00a0sentencing date.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The charge could carry as many as 30 years in prison and a fine of as much as $1m or twice the crime&#8217;s proceeds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The plea deal Mr Rimasauskas reached with prosecutors said he faces almost certain deportation once he finishes his prison time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In a statement on Wednesday, Geoffrey S Berman, the US attorney for the Southern District of New York, said: \u201cAs Evaldas Rimasauskas admitted today, he devised a blatant scheme to fleece US companies out of $100m, and then siphoned those funds to bank accounts around the globe.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Some of the money transfers involved banks in New York City, the indictment stated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0\u201cRimasauskas thought he could hide behind a computer screen halfway across the world while he conducted his fraudulent scheme, but as he has learned, the arms of American justice are long, and he now faces significant time in a US prison,\u201d Mr Berman added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Mr Rimasauskas was extradited from Lithuania to the United States in 2017. He has agreed to forfeit around $50m, court documents show.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">After his guilty plea last week, he could face up to 30 years in prison. He is scheduled to be sentenced in July.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In a court appearance, Mr Rimasauskas said that he had knowingly participated in fraud and that his role was to set up the bank accounts to facilitate the scheme, Bloomberg reported.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cI was asked to open bank accounts,\u201d he reportedly said. \u201cAfter that I did not do anything with these accounts.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> money was wired from the tech companies to the bank accounts in Cyprus and Latvia, the Justice Department said in its statement, Mr Rimasauskas \u201ccaused the stolen funds to be quickly wired into different bank accounts in various locations throughout the world, including Latvia, Cyprus, Slovakia, Lithuania, Hungary, and Hong Kong.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The statement added that he also helped to supply banks with forged documents to explain the large transfers of money.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Mr Rimasauskas was originally charged with five criminal counts that included identity theft and money laundering.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">But after last week\u2019s guilty plea for wire fraud, the remaining four charges should be dismissed at sentencing, said his lawyer, Paul D Petrus Jr.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cMr. Rimasauskas was far from a major actor in this matter,\u201d Mr Petrus said, adding that he did not know of any other people who have been charged in connection with the scheme.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In emailed statements Sunday, Facebook said the company had \u201crecovered the bulk of the funds shortly after the incident and has been cooperating with law enforcement in its investigation\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Google said it had \u201cdetected this fraud and promptly alerted the authorities.
