It is an attempt by scam artists to collect money from the call back,\u201d a social media post from the agency says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The wangiri or \u201cone-ring\u201d scam <strong><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2014\/02\/25\/whitepages-current-for-android-now-protects-against-one-ring-scam\/\">originally appeared in the U.S<\/a><\/strong>. in 2013.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cIf the victim calls back, they will be connected to an international hotline charging a connection fee, along with significantly high per-minute fees,\u201d <strong><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/hiya.com\/blog\/2019\/02\/26\/consumers-beware-one-ring-scam-makes-a-big-come-back-in-the-us\/\">according to Hiya<\/a><\/strong>, software that identifies unknown numbers and automatically blocks scam calls and internet spam across the globe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cUnfortunately, the victim doesn\u2019t realize they\u2019ve been scammed, until they see the premium services on their monthly phone bill.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Attorney General Mike Hunter on Friday issued a consumer alert in response to the rash of scam calls.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The calls appear to originate from the \u201c232\u201d area code of the African nation of Sierra Leone, according to the Attorney General\u2019s Office.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Hunter said while his office accepts consumer complaints on phone scams, they are extremely hard to trace.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cThese types of scams are malicious and my office is urging Oklahomans to pay close attention to the calls they are receiving,\u201d the attorney general said in a press release.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cIn addition to these scams charging high international and connection fees, the longer someone is on the phone, the more the scam call costs. \u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cThe best thing Oklahomans can do is to not answer unknown numbers and not call the number back.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Tulsa County Sheriff\u2019s Office spokeswoman Casey Roebuck said that though many Sheriff\u2019s Office employees received the calls themselves, no criminal complaints had been filed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Source:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tulsaworld.com\/news\/local\/widespread-calls-from-sierra-leone-a-scam-to-get-you\/article_3619135a-db7b-5766-ab7b-232d8a716e6a.html\">https:\/\/www.tulsaworld.com\/news\/local\/widespread-calls-from-sierra-leone-a-scam-to-get-you\/article_3619135a-db7b-5766-ab7b-232d8a716e6a.html<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tulsa World staffers received dozens of calls from Sierra Leone phone numbers, some listed as originating from the U.S., that are said to be part of a call-back scam.\u00a0 Recent calls from Sierra Leone to people in the Tulsa area and around the state are reportedly scams.
