{"id":3549,"date":"2019-07-01T00:23:16","date_gmt":"2019-06-30T23:23:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/globalfraudforensics.com\/fraudxpose\/?p=3549"},"modified":"2019-06-30T13:32:54","modified_gmt":"2019-06-30T12:32:54","slug":"record-fraud-and-errors-in-dwp-payments","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/globalfraudforensics.com\/fraudxpose\/record-fraud-and-errors-in-dwp-payments\/","title":{"rendered":"Record fraud and errors in DWP payments"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Fraud and errors related to payments made by the Department for Work and Pensions have reached record highs and are set to grow due to universal credit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The spending watchdog says the department\u2019s annual accounts showed overpayments related to benefits have increased to \u00a34bn (4.6%) in the last year \u2013 up from \u00a33.7bn (4.4%)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The National Audit Office analysis indicates that overpayments and underpayments reached their highest levels since 2005-6, when the current method for estimating these payments was introduced.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Gareth Davies, head of the <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.publicfinance.co.uk\/news\/2019\/06\/government-spending-organised-crime-not-enough\">NAO<\/a>, has issued a qualified opinion \u2013 signifying weaknesses \u2013\u00a0for the DWP\u2019s annual accounts, the 31<sup>st<\/sup> time this has happened. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The NAO said that benefit payments are susceptible to both deliberate<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.publicfinance.co.uk\/topics\/fraud\"> fraud<\/a> and unintended error by claimants and the department.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">When overpayments are recovered by the department, this can lead to problems for claimants who face deductions from their income. Underpayments can mean households do not get the support they are entitled to.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Davies said: \u201cThe value of fraud and error in benefit spending is a longstanding and costly issue for the department.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cI am concerned that this has reached its highest rate since the current estimation method was introduced, and that the department expects overpayments to rise even further.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cI would like to see the department make better use of its data to identify misreporting of benefit income and eradicate this cause of overpayments and underpayments.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The NAO noted that the DWP expects the value of overpayments to continue to rise over the next six years mainly due to the roll out of <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.publicfinance.co.uk\/news\/2019\/05\/dwp-probes-universal-credit-fraud-case\">universal credit<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The estimated overpayment rate for universal credit is 8.6%, which is the highest for any continuously measured benefit since tax credits in 2003\u201304.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Claimants failing to declare their income and earnings correctly was the largest cause of overpayments across the department\u2019s benefits, including universal credit where it accounts for 30% of overpayments.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The DWP has been approached for comment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Source :<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/www.publicfinance.co.uk\/news\/2019\/06\/record-fraud-and-errors-dwp-payments<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Fraud and errors related to payments made by the Department for Work and Pensions have reached record highs and are set to grow due to universal credit.
