Defrauded students violated EKSU payment policy, must repay – VC

The Vice Chancellor, Ekiti State University, Ado Ekiti, Prof. Edward Olanipekun, said on Thursday that the students of the institution who were defrauded following the payment of their school fees through uncertified cyber cafe were on their own for violating university policy and would repay the university.

Olanipekun, who said EKSU had centralised portal through which it collected money payable by students, said anyone who circumvented that channel would automatically bear the brunt.

The VC, who spoke in Ado Ekiti at the inauguration of the logo for the 40th establishment of the institution, called on the Students Union Government of the institution to sensitise the students further on the need to be cautious.

Some EKSU students had complained that they, on discovery that the institution’s portal was down, paid their fees for 2018/2019 academic session through some accounts of individuals who turned out to be scammers.

Olanipekun said, “We have our certified portal through which we receive payment. If you leave that and decide to pay where you like, you are on your own. All students must pay through our authorised portals. This is the instruction and you have to abide by it”.

The VC said EKSU had done creditably well in promoting scholarship in the last 40 years of its creation, adding that that award of first class degree to graduating students in Nigerian public universities including the institution, was largely by merit and not a matter of trade by barter.
