A 35-year-old man, Akinwande Ewegbayi, was on Monday brought before an Ota Magistrates’ Court in Ogun over alleged N800,000 fraud. Ewegbayi, who lives at No. 26, Oretola St., Iyana-Ilogbo, Ota in Ogun, is facing a three-count charge of fraud, conspiracy and obtaining money under false pretences. The Prosecutor, Sgt. Abdulkareem Mustapha, told the court that the defendant and others still at large, committed the offences on Aug. 25, 2017, at about 6.00p.m at Mefun Area, Ota. Mustapha said that the defendant collected N800,000 from the complainant, Precious Etim, on the pretext of connecting her to a prophet who could assist her solve some spiritual problems. READ ALSO: Amosun, Okorocha in dilemma after defeat of protégés “The defendant converted the money to his personal use and asked one of his friend to pose as a prophet,” he said. The prosecutor said that the offences contravened Sections 390(9),419 and 516 of the Criminal Code Vol. 1, Laws of Ogun, 2006. The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges. The Chief Magistrate, Mr Mathew Akinyemi, granted the defendant bail of N300,000 with two sureties in like sum. Akinyemi said that the sureties must reside within the court’s jurisdiction and be gainfully employed with evidence of tax payment to Ogun Government. He adjourned the case until April 1 for further hearing. (NAN)
